TOBERMORY CHURCHES

Tobermory was built in 1788 by the British Fisheries Society, as a planned settlement. Over the centuries the population increased to over 10,000 but the Highland Clearances and the Potato Famine reduced this number dramatically. By the 20th Century much of population had emigrated and there were more sheep on Mull than people. There were originally five churches, one medieval, St Mary's Chapel and Well and others which were built in the 19th and 20th centuries. For more information on the specific church click on the menu bar above for history and photographs.
