Calgary House and Tomb

On the south side of the bay Calgary Castle, now called Calgary House, was built in 1817 by Captain Alan MacAskill who retired here. He built the gothic part of the castle but added this on to what was traditionally the laird’s house built in the 1780’s. This in turn was built on the site of an earlier house. The library wing was built in the 1870’s. Captain MacAskill is buried in the Mausoleum behind and above the woodshed in the garden. Its gardens include 150 species of rhododendron and several specimen trees.

Colonel James Macleod, Commissioner of the North West Mounted Police, was a guest here and shortly afterwards on his return to Canada suggested its name for Fort Calgary which gave its name to the city of Calgary, Alberta.
