St. Mary's Chapel and Well

The name Tobermory is derived from the Gaelic "Tobar Mhoire" and relates to the Chapel and Well of the Virgin Mary.

The remains of the medieval chapel of St Mary's are located within the burial ground 400m west of Tobermory Harbour. The chapel can not be easily identified but there are some remains of the east and north walls and there is a turf covered mound which shows the line of the south wall. Two late medieval tombstones lie within the walls of the chapel.

The well is in fact a spring situated a few metres south of the ruined chapel on the other side of the road. A granite cross at the roadside, erected to commemorate the coronation of King Edward VII supposedly marks the site of the well of St Mary. Martin Martin stated that the well was reputed to have therapeutic qualities.
