Estate records were kept by landowners for several reasons, the lists enabled them to know how many men of working age lived on the estate and, per se, how much rent the landowner could expect from his tenants in any year. The records also meant that if the landowner needed to raise an army he knew immediately how many men of fighting age he could call up. The records below date from 1779 and predate the official census by some 62 years, however, the lists are a very valuable resource for genealogists and sociologists. It will be noted that there is plenty of detail for the men on the estate, such as name, age and occupation but the women are simply listed as chattels of the head of the household - no names and no ages.  The records below were collated by MH&AS member Mr. R. L. Moore, who very kindly gave his notebook to the Society, and transposed to a spreadsheet by member Mr. B. Patterson. The spelling of place names has been retained exactly as copied by Mr. Moore from the original records.
